Stephanie L. Reel

Stephanie Reel has served as the Interim Chief Information Officer for Washington University since December 1, 2020.  Prior to that, Ms. Reel served as the CIO for the Johns Hopkins University and Health System. She served as the Senior Vice President for Information Services for Johns Hopkins Medicine, a post she held since 1994. She also held the position of Vice Provost for Information Technology and CIO for the Johns Hopkins University since 1998.  

As CIO at Johns Hopkins, Ms. Reel led the implementation of the IT master plan and operational redesign for all aspects of information services including cyber security, network architecture and design as well as application development for the mission-related activity of the Johns Hopkins Health System and the Johns Hopkins University.  She led a team of more than 1500 IT professionals with a focus on patient care, education, and research. She led initiatives focused on high-performance computing, instructional technologies, precision medicine, and basic science research. She formed a governance structure to support funding and priority setting across both the university and health system to meet the education and research needs of the enterprise.  She effectively managed critical capital projects and significant annual operating budgets. Ms. Reel is proud of the degree of technology integration and staff development she achieved across the Johns Hopkins University and the Johns Hopkins Health System – two separate legal entities.

In 2019, Ms. Reel was appointed to the Board of the NIH Clinical Center, an appointment for which she is incredibly proud and grateful.  In 2009, she was appointed to the Health Information Technology Committee of President Obama’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology, which was also an exceptional honor.

Ms. Reel was named one of Maryland’s Top 100 Women in 2008 by the Daily Record, and recognized as the Alumna of the Year by the University of Maryland Baltimore County in 2008. She was named CIO of the Year in 2000 by the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME), and is the 2002 recipient of the National CIO 20/20 Vision Leader Award. She is a member of the Healthcare Information Management and Systems Society, the Healthcare Advisory Council, the American Medical Informatics Association, and EDUCAUSE.  She is a member of the College of Healthcare Information Systems Executives and served on the faculty of CHIME’s CIO Boot Camp. Ms. Reel is a frequent panel chair and moderator at the World Health Care Congress and an editorial advisory board member of Health Care Informatics. She served as an advisor to the National Academy’s Institute of Medicine to assess the adoption and implementation of Health IT Standards by the DHHS.  She co-chairs the IT Roundtable of the Academic Health Centers’ Clinical Research Forum, and serves on the Advisory Board of UMBC’s College of Engineering and Information Technology.  Ms. Reel is a member and past President of the Healthcare Information Systems Executive Association.

Ms. Reel is most proud of her children and grandchildren, all of whom, thankfully, live in the area.
